From creek bank soft edge to the urban edge of the City, the project reflects this duality and novelly re-presents the rich architectural history and industrial heritage of the storied site. The new material language and diverse mix of uses give fresh meaning and purpose to this reimagined pocket of the city. Materials like gabion, cast concrete, weathered metal, and warm woods enhance the visual and tactile experience.
The Yards
Stitching the Creek Bank to the City
Once home to an old abattoir and directly adjacent to the historic Wellington Destructor, a century-old garbage incinerator, the redevelopment of 2 Tecumseth reimagines a piece of the city’s history and transforms the area into a vibrant new community; its topography defined by the now-buried Garrison Creek.
The redevelopment plan features six thoughtfully designed buildings, including three towers, one mid-rise, and two existing repurposed commercial buildings on Niagara Street, each incorporating elements that reflect the site’s historical context. The retail areas introduce a “Hybrid House” concept, juxtaposing the soft, raw creek environment with the formal, finished urban landscape, creating a unique and inviting destination for residents and visitors. “The Yard” will be a vibrant gathering space for dining, socializing, and enjoying the surroundings, and “The Lowlands” are conceived of as a park-like plaza with sheltered outdoor dining, a hidden garden oasis, and a festival stage with amphitheater seating for community events.
The project will also introduce nearly 3.5 acres of public realm improvements and new parks, alongside a multi-use trail along the site’s southern boundary, connecting to the Tecumseth/Palmerston bike lane and the future West Toronto Rail Path extension. With a commitment to social and environmental impact, 2 Tecumseth aims to create a diverse and inclusive community.
