We’re honoured to share that Volta Winery has been recognized with a Canadian Architect Award of Excellence in the 58th Annual Canadian Architect Awards.

Set among twenty acres of vines in Prince Edward County, the winery’s three main volumes, linked beneath a dramatic courtyard-spanning timber roof, radiate around a central circular tasting bar. Clad in Canadian Corten steel and intentionally “pulled apart” like a traditional farmstead of house, barns, and silo, the architecture reinterprets regional precedents with thoughtful clarity. As juror Kelly Buffey noted: “This project operates inventively at the intersection of industrial function, landscape, cultural identity and experiential design… balancing bold architectural expression with contextual sensitivity.”

This sensitivity extends into its environmental strategies. Elements designed to ensure net-zero performance ensure resilience to Ontario’s dramatic seasonal shifts while minimizing the need for energy-intensive interior conditioning.

“The design team appears to have achieved its stated objective of creating architecture that ‘will reflect the wine in its quiet grandness and unexpected beauty while embracing and warming the palette.’ ” — Canadian Architect
