Pina’s session presented a strategy for ensuring longevity in retrofitted heritage structures that looks beyond building performance. 

As the needs of society evolve, preserving historic buildings becomes a delicate balance between honoring their heritage and adapting them to meet contemporary demands. The most impactful retrofits must go beyond envelope upgrades and consider the effects details, material selection, and building systems have on resource consumption, longevity, adaptability, and recyclability. Her presentation looked at three case studies adapting 19th Century masonry structures to examine strategies that support longevity while also leveraging the rich imprint of our historic fabric.
